Another quite wonderful day, just as sunny and warm as yesterday and with even more birds singing. WE went down the same way as we did yesterday and this time I brought the right lens with me. So I wasn’t surprised that the cranes weren’t even remotely close to where we walked š š š

It would be lying if I said I’ve done some work in the garden today but I have filled up the old wheel barrow with new soil and I have plenty of flower seeds to sow there when it is warm enough. Poppies of course because it seems that the only place they’ll grow in my garden is in that wheel barrow š š

My neighbors and I have decided that we’ll grow our vegetables together this year. They have voles in their garden so they can’t really have anything edible in the ground, like potatoes or carrots. I on the other hand only have sand beneath the grass so many vegetables will not especially thrive there. I said that I was thinking of perhaps having chickens this year, just in case everything goes wrong in the war in Ukraine. I’m not especially worried that things will go so bad that the world economy goes down but the risk is there depending on how Russia behaves.

Turns out that they too have been thinking of getting chickens and so have the beekeeper according to them, so perhaps we can do a joint mission of that. We’ll talk more about that later on. The big problem is: can anyone of us actually kill a chicken when it is time š š š So as I said I’m not really worried that everything will go south but I do like to be prepared for the worst just in case and if things work out fine we’ll still have fresh eggs to eat š š

It is time for a last cup of tea, then write down a list of what I need to buy in the grocery store tomorrow. I’ve done the laundry and I’ve vacuumed the floors so I feel I’ve done just enough for today š
Have a great day!

Hi Jaz!
The same here and so are my neighbors š š š
We could of course just use the eggs but then again what should we do with all old hen that won’t lay any eggs š š š
I hope the cold and gloomy weather stays with You for as long as You wish!
Have a great day!

Hi Christer,
I haven’t killed chickens myself but as a child I participated in the butchering of 100 chickens. My parents and three other families had a joint farm in Maine. Each family bought 25 chickens, one piglet, and paid for 1/4 of a beef calf. All summer the kids took care of the animals. I refused to take care of the chickens because chickens are evil so I got the pigs. At the end of summer, right before we had to go back to school, all the chickens were slaughtered. The boys caught them, one of the men killed them, one of the women cleaned them because she knew how. It’s not like gutting fish. The rest of the women and girls plucked them. If you get chickens, my advice would be to take them to the local abattoir and have them do it. Much neater for you and kinder to the chickens if the human hasn’t done it before. Also, there’s probably a rescue organization for chickens that are done laying. We have them here because we have a lot of urban flocks. People really don’t want to kill their spent hens but they don’t want to spend money feeding them either.
It’s murky but warm here today. Peapod is doing my grocery shopping for me. I have done nothing except take the dogs for a walk and a car ride.
Have a great day.

Hi Caryn!
I’ve never heard of a joint farm like that before, smart idea! That would sort of be the same here but with just chickens š š I’ve never heard that chickens are evil before but I do know geese are. The farm next door had three geese brothers when I moved here and they were 100% evil, I must write about them in my blog some day š
There aren’t any local abattoirs here any more. I don’t think we even have one of the big ones left any longer either. There are those butchers that drive around in a rebuilt lorry one can call but most of them would give us plenty of new and exciting diseases from what I’ve heard š š š
Another sunny and warm day here but they are guessing that next week will turn back to cold again, I really don’t like that guess of theirs š š
Have a great day!
Christer.

My mother told me that shortly after she was married to my father, they raised some chicken. I don’t know if these were egg layers. She told me how she killed them for dinner. These were during the depression years and when killing a chicken meant having dinner. Personally, I would not be able to do it.

Hi Beatrice!
Yes having chickens means food and since we don’t know how bad thing might be now when the Russians keep on with the war even though it now looks as the Ukrainians are slowly but steadily winning it. If Putin get desperate enough who knows what he’ll do and what that will do to the economy?
Like You however I’m not sure I would be able to do it š š
Have a great day!
